Making the Mole Concept Click and Stick: Lab Stations That Bring Avogadro’s Number to Life

The idea of a mole and Avogadro’s number of atoms and molecules involves numbers so large that students can’t visualize them. The year of chemistry is going to involve endless conversions between mass, moles, and molecules. Students need to grasp this concept quickly because the truth is, the mole is the backbone of chemistry. Without a strong foundation in this concept, everything from stoichiometry to chemical reactions becomes a stumbling block.

What Is the Mole Concept in Chemistry?

The mole is a counting unit in chemistry. Just as a dozen means 12 items, a mole represents a very large number of particles. That number is Avogadro’s number, which is 6.02 x 1023 particles. Students use the mole to connect tiny particles such as atoms and molecules to measurable amounts such as grams.

This is exactly why the mole concept can feel so difficult at first. Students are being asked to connect a microscopic world they cannot see with real quantities they can measure in the lab. A strong mole concept activity or mole lab can make that connection much more understandable.

Why Is the Mole Concept So Difficult for Students?

Many students struggle with the mole concept because it combines very large numbers, abstract particles they cannot see, and multiple types of conversions. Students must connect atoms and molecules to grams and measurable lab data, and that takes practice. A good mole lab activity helps students visualize the concept, talk through their thinking, and apply mole conversions in a way that feels more concrete.

Traditional worksheets have their place in our chemistry classes. There are often times that a calculation needs to be practiced and there is not enough time to turn it into a game or lab. Honestly, relying on a practice problem worksheet is not a bad thing. But, if the opportunity arises where the problems can be practiced using a lab activity, great! This kind of mole lab gives students a more meaningful way to practice than a worksheet alone.

Science Skills Activities That Prepare Students for the Lab

Science content changes from unit to unit, but science skills are used all year. Students need to measure, observe, calculate, graph, analyze, and communicate results whether they are studying biology, chemistry, physical science, or environmental science.

A great place to begin is with basic laboratory equipment. If students are comfortable using a graduated cylinder, metric ruler, laboratory balance, and Celsius thermometer, they will be ready when those tools are used in future lab investigations.

Why Science Skills Lab Stations Work Better Than a Lecture

Students do not learn to use science skills by listening to teachers talk about them. They learn by practicing. They learn by making mistakes, asking questions, correcting those mistakes, and trying again.

This is especially true for skills such as scientific notation, the scientific method, metric units, and graphing. These are not one-time lessons. Students need repeated practice with them in a setting where they can talk through the process.

How to Use These Science Skills Chat Lab Stations

One of the questions I hear most often is, "How do you fit 17 stations into your schedule?"

It's a mistake to try to fit in all 17 lab stations in one activity. I usually choose four or five stations that match the skills students need before an upcoming lab. For example, before our first investigation, students might rotate through the graduated cylinder, metric ruler, laboratory balance, and Celsius thermometer stations.

Later in the year, I pull out different stations before teaching graphing, scientific notation, or the scientific method. Because each activity stands alone, the stations become a resource I can use all year instead of just during the first week of school.

Why I Created These Science Skills Chat Lab Stations

To help my students review and strengthen these skills, I created Science Skills Chat, a set of 17 collaborative lab stations focused on the essential skills students need in science class.

I use the word chat on purpose. Students are not meant to sit silently and complete worksheets in isolation. They are expected to work together, talk through problems, ask questions, and help one another understand the skill being practiced at each station.

This kind of peer tutoring is powerful. I like to arrange groups so that each group has at least one strong student. Students who are less confident often feel more comfortable asking a classmate for help than raising their hand and asking the teacher in front of the whole class. At the same time, the stronger students deepen their own understanding by explaining their thinking to someone else.

A Favorite Station: Lab Equipment Card Sort

One of my favorite stations is the Lab Equipment Card Sort. Students work together to match 42 common pieces of laboratory equipment with their names and functions.

This station is a great example of why the "chat" format works so well. Students are not just memorizing a list of equipment names. They are looking at the equipment, reading the function cards, discussing possibilities, and making decisions together. That kind of interaction helps the information stick.

The Scientific Method Station

The scientific method is another skill that students will use again and again. In this station, students practice identifying variables, designing an experiment, organizing data, graphing results, and drawing conclusions.

I like this station because it pulls together so many important science process skills in one place. Students are not just defining vocabulary words. They are applying the scientific method to an actual scenario and using data to support a conclusion.

You Do Not Have to Complete All 17 Stations at Once

You do not have to complete all 17 lab stations in a multi-day marathon session. That would be too much for most classes, and student retention of the skills would suffer.

I suggest choosing 4 or 5 stations that match the skills your students need most right away. For example, if you are getting ready to begin your first lab, you may want students to practice using the graduated cylinder, laboratory balance, metric ruler, and Celsius thermometer first.

Later in the year, you can pull out another group of stations when those skills are needed. This makes the resource useful long after the first week of school.

Try Science Skills Friday

One of my favorite ways to use this resource is to create a "Science Skills Friday." Choose a small group of stations and use them as a weekly review and reinforcement day.

This works especially well because students are not overwhelmed by too many stations at once. They get focused practice on a few important skills, and the completed handouts can be kept in a notebook for reference later in the year.

You can also use individual stations for review before a lab, intervention, early finishers, or emergency sub plans. Some stations do require lab equipment, but several can be completed without a full lab setup.

Back-to-School Science Lab Setup Guide & Checklist for High School Teachers

Back-to-school science lab checklist for preparing a high school science laboratory before students arrive

Walking back into a science lab after summer break can feel a little overwhelming. Did I really go home for the summer and leave my lab like this?

By the time I walked back into my lab in August, it never looked quite the way I had left it. It was dusty, furniture and equipment had been moved during the summer floor waxing, and things had been piled on top of the lab tables. I thought I had left the lab in pretty good shape in May, but by August it was definitely looking a little rough.

There were so many chores that needed to be done that it was hard to know where to begin. I'm a list person, so the first thing I always did was make a checklist of everything I wanted to accomplish. In this blog post, I'm sharing that same checklist of tasks I completed before students returned to the classroom each fall.

Some of these jobs only take a few minutes. Others can take an afternoon. But taking care of them before students arrived made the first few weeks of school run much more smoothly.

The Ultimate Back-to-School Science Lab Checklist

1. Assess the "Summer Damage"

The first thing I always did was simply walk through the room and look at everything with fresh eyes. During the summer, classrooms collect dust, equipment gets moved by custodians, and things that used to sit on the floor, such as lab stools, are piled on top of the lab tables while the floors are being waxed. Also, many science teachers share a common storeroom. Multiple teachers sharing one storeroom usually means one thing: a messy storeroom!

Before worrying about lesson plans or decorating, I wanted the laboratory itself functioning efficiently again.

The first few hours you spend organizing your classroom will save you dozens of hours during the school year. If everything has a designated home, setup and cleanup become much faster for both you and your students.

Organize Your Science Storeroom

If your science storeroom looks anything like mine did after a busy school year, don't feel bad. Mine usually became the dumping ground for equipment, boxes, extra supplies, and unfinished projects by May.

August was my chance to reset everything. I recycled empty boxes, threw away broken equipment, grouped similar materials together, and made sure I could actually find what I needed.

Getting organized before school started saved me countless trips into the storeroom while students waited for supplies during lab activities.

Label Storage Bins

One of the best organizational systems I ever created was labeling storage bins. Every common supply had its own labeled container. Students quickly learned where to find equipment and, even more importantly, where to return it when class ended.

Organize Student Lab Stations

Every student lab station should begin the year exactly the same. I checked each cabinet to make sure it contained the basic equipment students would need throughout the year, including a Bunsen burner, burner hose, test tube rack, graduated cylinder and any other permanent supplies assigned to that station.

Wash and Organize Lab Aprons

My classroom aprons always needed attention after sitting all summer. This was a chore that I rarely completed at the end of the previous school year. I washed them, inspected every tie and strap, replaced damaged aprons, and rehung everything by size. Students could quickly grab one that fit, and I didn't have to sort through tangled aprons during class.

Check Your Chemical Storage Area

Make Sure Every Container Is Labeled: One thing I always checked was that every chemical container had a readable label. Over time, labels can peel off, become stained, or fade until they're difficult to read. If I found a bottle with a damaged or missing label, I replaced the label immediately rather than guessing what was inside later. A few minutes spent checking labels in August helped prevent confusion and made the chemical storeroom much safer throughout the school year.

Dispose of Expired or Unknown Chemicals: While I was checking my inventory, I also looked for chemicals that were expired, no longer needed, or couldn't be positively identified. Those containers were set aside and disposed of according to my school's safety procedures. If you have any questions about a chemical, don't keep it "just in case." It's much better to handle the issue before students return than to discover a potential safety problem during the school year.

Once my laboratory was organized, I turned my attention to the most important part of preparing for a new school year ... the lab safety equipment.

Safety equipment quietly sits in the background all year long. We hope we never need to use it, but if an emergency happens, everything has to work exactly as it should. That's why I always inspected every piece of emergency equipment before students ever entered the lab.

☐ Check the safety shower
☐ Inspect fire extinguishers
☐ Inspect fire blankets
☐ Locate and test the master gas and electrical shutoff controls
☐ Inspect gas outlets at each student station
☐ Replace expired first aid supplies
☐ Clean the fume hood
☐ Clean and sanitize safety goggles

Never assume safety equipment is ready simply because it was working in May. A few minutes spent inspecting it in August can make a tremendous difference if an emergency ever occurs.

Flush the Eyewash Station

The eyewash station was always one of my first stops. Thankfully, I never had an occasion to have to use the eyewash. Dust and mineral deposits accumulated over the summer. My eyewash station always needed a thorough cleaning after sitting unused. Before students returned, I flushed the lines, cleaned the basin, and made sure the water flowed properly. Once it was flushed, cleaned, and tested, I knew it would be ready if a student ever needed it.

Inspect Fire Safety Equipment

Next came the fire safety equipment. I checked every fire extinguisher to make sure it was properly charged, inspected, and easy to reach. I also inspected the fire blanket and made sure nothing had been stacked in front of it during the summer. I rarely needed a fire extinguisher during my teaching career. But every August I checked it anyway because if the day ever came that I needed it, there wouldn't be time to discover a problem.

Don't Forget the Fume Hood

If your classroom has a chemical fume hood, don't overlook it during your back-to-school preparations. Remove anything that has been stored inside, wipe down the work surface, make sure the sash operates smoothly, and verify that the ventilation system is functioning properly according to your district's procedures. A fume hood is designed to protect you and your students. It is not intended to become another storage cabinet!

Wash and Sanitize Safety Goggles

Every August, my goggle cabinet looked about like this. Every student who enters your laboratory deserves clean safety equipment. Before your first lab, wash every pair of goggles, replace broken straps, inspect the lenses for scratches, and sanitize them before placing them back in the cabinet.

Teach Lab Safety Before the First Experiment

The final item on my safety checklist wasn't equipment. My final item was to review my lab safety unit. No matter how excited you may be to get students into the lab, it is imperative that you first teach a unit on laboratory safety.

Students must learn how to use safety equipment, practice emergency procedures, review laboratory rules, and sign a laboratory safety contract before they ever pick up a beaker or test tube.

3. Prepare Your Classroom

Once the safety equipment, chemicals, and student lab stations were checked, I turned my attention to the lab itself. This was the time to clean the spaces students would use every day.

☐ Check faucets and drains
☐ Clean the demonstration area 
☐ Make sure each lab station has paper towels and cleaner. 

I started with the lab tables and sinks because those areas get used constantly. I wiped down the surfaces, checked each sink, and made sure the drains were clear. A slow drain or leaky faucet is much easier to deal with before students are standing around waiting to begin an experiment.

I also cleaned and organized my demonstration area. If I was going to use that space during the first week of school, I wanted it clear, clean, and ready to go. It is hard to feel prepared when the first thing students see is a cluttered demonstration table.

Leave cleaning supplies where students can easily access them after labs. If you expect students to help clean their lab stations, make it easy for them to do it correctly. And don't forget to have plenty of paper towels on hand.

4. Prepare Technology

Technology may not be the first thing that comes to mind when preparing a science lab, but it can certainly derail a lesson if it is not working. Before students returned, I always checked the technology I knew I would need during the first week of school.

☐ Test your projector
☐ Check your document camera
☐ Log into classroom technology
☐ Update Google Classroom or your LMS

I turned on the projector, checked the document camera, logged into the computer, and made sure everything connected the way it should. I also opened any files, slides, videos, or digital assignments I planned to use during the first few days of school.

If you use Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology, or another learning management system, this is a good time to archive last year’s classes, create new ones, update links, and make sure students will be able to access what they need.

Open every digital file you plan to use during the first week. Broken links, missing videos, and files that will not load are much easier to fix before students are sitting in front of you.

5. One Last Walk-Through

Before I considered my lab ready for students, I did one final walk-through. This was not a quick glance from the doorway. I walked through the room as if I were a student entering the lab for the first time.

☐ Open every cabinet and drawer
☐ Test sinks, faucets, and water supply
☐ Test gas where appropriate
☐ Make sure emergency equipment is accessible
☐ Double-check supplies for your first lab

I opened cabinets and drawers, turned on faucets, checked the gas where appropriate, and made sure emergency equipment was not blocked. I also looked carefully at the flow of the room. Where would students put backpacks? Where would dirty glassware go? Where would students find goggles, aprons, and other safety equipment?

Finally, I double-checked the supplies for my first lab activity. If I could walk through the first lab in my mind and find everything I needed, I knew I was ready.

Do your final walk-through from a student’s point of view. If students will need to find something, clean something, dispose of something, or move through a certain area, make sure the procedure is obvious before the first lab begins.

Once you have worked through this checklist, take a deep breath. Your lab is ready.

There will always be more to do, but completing these steps helped me start the school year with confidence. My lab was clean, organized, safe, and ready for students. That made the first few weeks of school feel so much smoother.

Spring is the perfect time for an outdoor ecosystem lab, but a successful outdoor science activity requires clear structure, strong expectations, and a meaningful assignment.

If you are looking for an outdoor ecosystem lab for high school biology, spring is one of the best times of year to do it. Students are ready to get outside, ecosystems are active and changing, and it is much easier for students to observe real relationships between organisms when they can see them in context. That is why I like using a detailed ecosystem field study instead of simply sending students outside to observe nature. In this activity, students work in small groups to study a 5 m x 5 m outdoor ecosystem. They mark off the area, map the physical features, identify living organisms, and record evidence of ecological interactions. Science Chat Lab Stations for Biology and Chemistry Classes

A few years ago, I wanted to do something different on the first day of school. Most of the teachers at my school, including me, were doing the same thing all day long: going over the course syllabus, passing out textbooks, and reading the dreaded classroom rules. After one class period of this, all that the students heard was, "Blah, blah, blah." It was definitely time for me to do something different.

After giving it some thought, Biology Chat was born. My goals were simple: get students actively engaged in science on the very first day of school and help them get to know new classmates in our very large school. These goals were accomplished! In fact, the activity was so popular with my biology students that I quickly developed Chemistry Chat for my chemistry classes.

Since then, my Science Chat Lab Stations have grown into a complete collection of biology, chemistry, lab safety, microscope, science skills, ecology, cell biology, plant biology, and first day of school station activities. You can view all of my Chat Lab Stations in my TPT store here.

What Are Science Chat Lab Stations?

My "Chat" activities are rotating science lab stations that involve collaborative student groups. At each station, students work together to solve a problem, complete a task, analyze data, interpret information, or conduct a short science experiment.

The word "chat" is intentional. These activities are designed to get students talking, but with a purpose. They are chatting about science concepts, classroom expectations, lab safety, data analysis, biology topics, chemistry skills, and the kinds of questions that help them connect with their classmates.

Let's face it. High school students have socializing on their minds all day long. Chat Lab Stations give them a structured way to talk, move, think, and learn at the same time.

Why Chat Lab Stations Work in Science Class

1. Students are up, out of their seats, and moving. It is a rare student who can sit in a desk for eight hours and still be fully alert at the end of the day. Chat Lab Stations allow students to move around the room, giving them a short mental reset between tasks.

2. Students practice working in groups. Group work is an important part of science class, and it is also a skill students will need throughout life. Lab station activities teach students how to work together, listen to one another, divide responsibilities, and complete a task as a team.

3. Lab stations allow for differentiation. We all teach classes that contain students with widely varying ability levels. It is not always necessary for every student to complete every station. You can select the stations that best fit your students, shorten the rotation, provide additional support, or include a challenge station for early finishers.

4. Each station focuses on one task or concept. Science can feel overwhelming when students are given too much information at once. A station format breaks the lesson into manageable pieces. Students can focus on one graph, one model, one safety scenario, one microscope skill, or one set of questions before moving to the next task.

5. Peer teaching happens naturally. A struggling student may understand an explanation from a classmate in a way that feels less intimidating. The informal station format gives students opportunities to talk through ideas, compare answers, and help one another.

6. I can interact with more students. While students rotate through the stations, I can walk around the room, listen to conversations, answer questions, and check in with individual students. I love being able to connect with students both personally and academically while they are actively working.

Tips for Using Lab Stations Successfully

Choose groups carefully. I rarely allow students to choose their own lab groups. I want students to have some social time, but I also want that conversation to stay focused on the topics and concepts we are learning. Before students arrive, I usually have groups ready to go. Changing the group composition throughout the year keeps students from becoming too comfortable and helps them learn to work with different classmates.

Include a variety of station tasks. You do not want students labeling a diagram at every station. They will quickly lose interest. The best lab station activities include a mix of tasks such as completing short experiments, analyzing graphs, interpreting diagrams, sorting cards, using simple lab equipment, making observations, answering questions, and applying vocabulary.

Make stations independent whenever possible. Station rotations work much better when students can move through the stations in any order. If stations have to be completed in a specific sequence, you can end up with a traffic jam in one part of the room.

Monitor the room all period long. Movement and collaboration are wonderful, but students still need structure. Circulate, listen, redirect, encourage, and make sure students stay on task.

When Can You Use Science Chat Lab Stations?

Chat Lab Stations are flexible enough to use in many different ways. Some are designed for the first day of school, while others work well during a unit, at the end of a unit, or as a review activity.

I use station activities for first day of school icebreakers, lab safety practice, science skills review, microscope practice, content review, test preparation, and hands-on reinforcement. They can also work well when you need a structured activity that keeps students engaged while you circulate and help individual groups.

First Day of School Science Chat Activities

My first Chat activities were designed for the first day of school. Instead of spending the entire class period reading rules and procedures, students rotate through stations, complete science tasks, and answer icebreaker questions. These activities help students begin building classroom community while also giving me a first look at their incoming science skills.

Biology Chat is a first day of school biology activity that combines biology review tasks with student icebreaker questions. Students rotate through stations involving graphing, observations, measurement, microscope-related tasks, and basic biology concepts. Science Skills and Laboratory Chat Activities

Some Chat activities are designed to strengthen the general science and laboratory skills students need all year long. These are especially helpful at the beginning of the school year, before labs, or anytime students need practice with foundational skills.

Science Skills Chat includes 17 lab stations that focus on important science process skills such as graphing, tabling data, scientific drawings, accuracy, precision, percentage error, lab equipment, Celsius temperature, and more.

Lab Safety Chat helps students review laboratory safety rules, safety symbols, hazard identification, and safety scenarios. Good lab safety instruction is not optional, and this station activity provides comprehensive instruction in lab safety. Technology Chat is a digital activity that helps students practice using Google Apps and digital classroom tools. It works well when students need practice with digital expectations, online learning routines, or technology skills.

Many of my Chat activities are designed for specific biology units. These work well during instruction, as station rotations, or as review activities before an assessment.

Cell Chat gives students practice with cell theory, cell organelles, plant cells, microscope observations, and cell structure and function.

Mitosis and Meiosis Chat focuses on cell division, the cell cycle, mitosis, meiosis, crossing over, chromosome arrangement, and related review tasks.

Ecology Chat 1 introduces students to important ecology concepts and vocabulary. Ecology Chat 2 focuses on population ecology, including random sampling, population density, exponential growth, and population dynamics.

Plant Kingdom Chat includes plant biology lab stations with plant classification, flower identification, fern observations, microscope activities, and plant kingdom review tasks.

Animal Development Chat introduces students to animal symmetry, embryology, and development through interactive lab stations.

Chemistry Content Chat Lab Stations

The newest addition to my Chat collection is a chemistry activity designed to help students practice one of the most difficult topics in first-year chemistry: the mole concept.

Mole Chat gives students practice with mass, moles, molar mass, Avogadro's Number, and mole calculations through hands-on chemistry lab stations. Students work through questions such as how many moles of chalk it takes to write a name and how many grams, moles, and molecules of sucrose are found in candy. Frequently Asked Questions About Chat Lab Stations

How many students should be in each group?

I usually prefer small groups of two to four students. This gives students enough support for discussion without creating groups so large that one or two students can avoid participating.

Do students have to complete the stations in order?

My Chat activities are designed so that stations can be completed in any order. This makes the rotation much easier because students can move to any open station instead of waiting for one specific station to become available.

Can Chat Lab Stations be used for review?

Yes. Many of the content-based Chat activities work well as review before a quiz or test. Students revisit key vocabulary, diagrams, calculations, data analysis, and concepts in a format that feels more active than a worksheet.

Can I use Chat Lab Stations on a block schedule?

Yes. On a block schedule, students may be able to complete more stations or spend more time discussing each task. In a shorter class period, you can select fewer stations or split the activity over two days.

Can I use lab stations with a substitute teacher?
