Science Fun this Thanksgiving!


This science-y activity is a perfect way to celebrate Thanksgiving in your science classroom.

In the fall of 1621, the members of the Plymouth Colony, along with their Wampanoag friends, celebrated with a feast of Thanksgiving.  For three days all of the participants feasted, played games, sang, danced, and gave thanks for their blessings.  The menu for this first Thanksgiving feast included deer, corn, shellfish, vegetables and roasted meats.  Although the menu has changed a bit over time, we Americans still celebrate a time of Thanksgiving with a very large meal!

Are you looking for an activity to do in your science classes as the holidays approach?  I have just written a new activity that uses a dichotomous classification key to identify the scientific names of the foods that were eaten at the first Thanksgiving celebration.  Students will use their critical thinking and problem solving skills to make observations about the different foods while they navigate the dichotomous key to the correct scientific name.

This dichotomous key activity uses insects and arthropods to teach classification and taxonomy. Students learn how to use a dichotomous key and then create one of their own.

If you are looking for a simple and engaging way to introduce classification, this activity helps students practice observation, decision-making, and critical thinking skills in a hands-on way. It is designed for upper elementary, middle school, and early high school students who are learning how classification keys work in a science classroom.

This activity is especially well suited for middle school life science and introductory classification units, but it also works well as a simple review activity in high school biology classes.

A Dichotomous Key Activity for Classification and Taxonomy

Science students really do enjoy working through a dichotomous key. There is something satisfying about making observations, choosing between two options, and narrowing down the correct answer. That is exactly why dichotomous key activities work so well during a classification and taxonomy unit.

This resource gives students two connected activities. In the first part, they use a student friendly dichotomous key to classify insects. In the second part, they use their observations to create their own dichotomous key for several arthropods. That combination makes this more than just a worksheet. Students first learn the process and then apply it on their own.

This activity works especially well as an introduction to classification because students do not need a heavy load of new vocabulary before they begin. Instead, they can focus on careful observation, logical thinking, and the structure of a classification key.

How Students Use the Dichotomous Key

In the first part of the activity, students learn how to use a dichotomous key to classify organisms. This gives students a clear, step by step way to practice classification and build confidence using scientific tools.

Because the key is simple and student friendly, this is a great activity for teaching the structure of a dichotomous key before students move on to more advanced scientific keys. It is especially helpful for grades 4 through 7, but it also works well in high school biology as an easy first experience with classification keys.

Students Also Create Their Own Dichotomous Key

In the second part of the activity, students observe the five classes of arthropods and develop their own dichotomous key. Students record their answers and complete analysis questions to reinforce classification concepts.

This is one of my favorite parts of the lesson because students move beyond simply following a key and begin thinking about how a key is built. They have to notice traits, compare organisms, and decide how to organize their observations into logical choices. That makes this a strong critical thinking activity as well as a classification lesson.

If you are looking for a dichotomous key activity for middle or high school biology, this is one of the easiest ways to help students practice classification, observation, and critical thinking in your classroom.

A dichotomous key is a tool used to identify organisms by following a series of two choices based on observable characteristics. In biology, dichotomous keys help students compare traits, make decisions, and classify living things in a logical way.

They are often used in field guides, but they are also one of my favorite tools for teaching observation skills, critical thinking, and scientific classification in the classroom.

If you are teaching classification and taxonomy, dichotomous keys are an easy way to move students from memorizing vocabulary to actually using it. Students must look carefully, compare structures, and apply what they know about organisms.

Hot to Teach Dichotomous Keys in Biology

The word dichotomous means divided into two parts. A dichotomous key gives students two choices at each step. After choosing the statement that best matches the organism, they move to the next step until they arrive at the correct identification. This process helps students slow down, notice important characteristics, and think like scientists.

Dichotomous keys can be simple enough for an introductory classification lesson, or they can be more detailed for advanced biology students. They are useful when identifying plants, insects, vertebrates, invertebrates, and many other groups of organisms.

How to Use a Dichotomous Key

When students are first learning to use a dichotomous key, I encourage them to follow a few simple steps:

  1. Observe the organism carefully.
  2. Read both choices before deciding.
  3. Choose the statement that best matches the organism.
  4. Follow the directions to the next pair of statements.
  5. Continue until the organism is identified.

Students often need repeated practice with a variety of organisms before they feel confident. That is one reason I like to use several different dichotomous key activities throughout a classification unit. Over the years, I have created several dichotomous key activities for different grade levels and different science topics. If you want your students to learn how to use a dichotomous key, then move into deeper practice and application, these are the four activities I would start with.

Below are the dichotomous key activities I use in my own classroom, starting with a simple introduction and moving into more advanced applications.

1. Start Here: Genus Smiley Dichotomous Key Activity

My Genus Smiley dichotomous key activity is a fun and approachable introduction to classification keys. Students first practice using a dichotomous key to identify the members of the Genus Smiley. Then they take the next step and create their own dichotomous key to classify insects. This one is a great entry point because students quickly learn the process without being overwhelmed by heavy vocabulary.

2. Build and Use Classification Keys

Once students understand the basics, I like to move them into an activity that requires both identification and construction. In Build and Use Classification Keys, students first use a dichotomous key to classify cone bearing plants. Then they create their own key to classify primates. This activity is excellent for practicing observation and critical thinking because students must analyze similarities and differences and then organize those observations into a working classification key.

3. Insects and Arthropods Dichotomous Key Activity

If you want a content-specific classification activity, my Insects and Arthropods dichotomous key activity is another strong choice. Students use the included key to identify 12 insects, then design their own key to classify arthropods. This resource works well as guided practice during a classification unit and gives students another opportunity to apply what they know in a new context.

Free Holiday Dichotomous Key Activity for Middle School Science and Biology

This holiday dichotomous key activity is one of my favorite ways to combine science skills, classification practice, and community service during the busy weeks before winter break. Students use a playful dichotomous classification key to identify candy and toiletries by their “scientific” names, and then the items are sorted into stockings and donation bags for a local food bank, shelter, nursing home, or other community organization.

If you teach classification, taxonomy, dichotomous keys, or life science skills, this free activity gives students a meaningful way to review those concepts while doing something kind for the community. It works well for middle school science, high school biology, holiday enrichment, seasonal sub plans, or the last few class periods before a school break.

A Holiday Classification Activity with a Purpose

I originally created this activity because I wanted something that would keep my biology students engaged right before Christmas break, but I did not want to use a filler activity. I also wanted my students to participate in a simple community service project that still connected to science in a natural way.

The idea is simple. Students collect or help provide small candies and travel size toiletries. Then they use a dichotomous key to classify each item. After the items are classified, the candy goes into small stockings and the toiletries go into quart size storage bags. The finished items can then be donated to a local food bank, shelter, nursing home, Salvation Army, church outreach program, or another organization in your community.

How the Dichotomous Key Activity Works

Students are given a group of familiar holiday items, including candy and small toiletry items. They use the dichotomous classification key to follow a series of paired choices and determine the scientific name of each “organism.” The key uses playful pseudo-Latin terminology and classification clues, which makes the activity lighthearted while still reinforcing how a dichotomous key is used.

As students work, they record the common name of each item, the classification path they followed, and the scientific name they identified. This gives them practice reading the key carefully, making decisions based on observable characteristics, and tracking the path used to reach an identification.

What Students Do After Classifying the Items

Once the classification portion of the activity is complete, students sort the items into donation containers. The edible items are placed into small stockings, and the toiletries are placed into storage bags. This part of the activity is what makes it so memorable. Students are not just completing a worksheet. They are using a science skill to prepare something that can be shared with people in the community.

In my classroom, we collected money for several weeks before the holiday break. I used the money to purchase candy, small stockings, and travel size toiletries. You could also ask students to bring in approved items, collect donations through a club, or partner with a school organization that already sponsors a holiday giving project.

What This Looks Like in Your Classroom

This lesson works best when students work with a partner or small group. Each group receives the student handout, the dichotomous key, a set of candy items, a set of toiletry items, one small stocking, and one storage bag. Students classify each item, complete the data table, and then place the items in the correct donation container.

You can use this as a review activity after teaching dichotomous keys, as part of a classification and taxonomy unit, or as a meaningful holiday science activity when students are excited and schedules are unusual. It is especially helpful during those last few days before break when you want students engaged, but you also want the activity to have a real purpose.

Teacher Tips for Using This Activity

Check all donated items before using them in class. Candy should be sealed, and toiletries should be new and unopened. If your school has food allergy guidelines or donation restrictions, adjust the items as needed.

You can also simplify the project by preparing the items yourself, using only a small number of groups, or having students complete the classification activity first and then assemble the donation bags as a class. The activity is flexible enough to fit a full class period, a shortened schedule, or a seasonal enrichment day.

Why This Free Dichotomous Key Activity Works

This activity gives students a fun way to practice using a dichotomous key without feeling like they are completing another ordinary review worksheet. The holiday theme keeps students interested, the pseudo-Latin names add humor, and the community service component gives the activity a purpose beyond the classroom.

I have always loved that this activity lets students review a real science skill while also seeing how a classroom project can benefit others. The finished stockings and toiletry bags may be small contributions, but students remember being part of the project.

Teach Classification and Make It Fun!!


What is this organism?  

What characteristics does it have?  To what other organisms is it similar?  Is it a vertebrate or an invertebrate?  What does it eat?  What role does it play in an ecosystem?

All biology teachers have particular topics that they really don't like to teach, and topics that we LOVE LOVE to teach.  Teaching classification is a topic that I LOVE!


Classification involves problem solving and critical thinking.  Basically a taxonomist is a "living organism detective".

I have two really fun activities that my students always enjoy.  The first is called "Let's Learn to Use and Build a Dichotomous Key".    This product teaches students all about dichotomous classification keys.  Students will learn why classification is necessary, the definition of a dichotomous key, and how to use a dichotomous key.  Students will analyze the included pictures of 7 different cone-bearing plants, using the included dichotomous key to classify them.   




Finally students will learn to construct a classification key of their own.  Students are given pictures of 12 different primates and asked to make their own classification key.  There are also 10 follow up questions for students to answer.



The second activity that I love to do with my students is called "Let's Build A Cladogram".  Cladistics is one of the newest trends in the modern classification of organisms.  It shows the relationship between different organisms based on the presence or absence of characteristics called derived characters.  In this activity, students will look at pictures  of 7 different animals to determine if they possess certain derived characters.  This data will then be used to build a cladogram.



There are just so many fun things to do when teaching classification.  I always have to make myself wrap up the unit and move on to a new topic!
